21st: Finally get a chance to download and read the pdf copy of the article on us in 'Stage, Screen and Radio', (the magazine for industry professionals who are members of Britain's Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union - BECTU).It's wonderful to have such interest and support from BECTU and we look forward to answering any enquiries or responding to offers of help. (Will upload the magazine article later today - Ed) 6th: We held a successful seminar for SLBS staff, entitled 'Positive Producing' about the personal and proffessional steps required to develop good programme production in Sierra Leone. It was well attended by a very positive and interested audience of TV and Radio producers, reporters and presenters as well as key Senior Executive Staff.

JULY
11th: The Workshop receives an urgent request at 8am in the morning from the NGO, Warchild. They have adocumentary film crew shooting a film for WarChild near Port Loko, andneed a spare camera for 2-3days as theirs is giving problems. Unfortunately despite many phone calls, everyone with an HD or semi-pro camera is unavailable or shooting the APC election campaign rally, (or charging unrealistic rates such as USD200 per day!!!) A shame we weren't able to help on this occasion, but we learned a couple of lessons. It showed the importance of maintaining the register of professionals and production equipment available,in Sierra Leone, (and also why those lucky enough to have their own equipment - frequently given to them free anyway - should be more realistic about charging extortionate rates!) 7th: XTV launched today on the auspicious date of 07.07.07! After a few technical hiccups, we went 'on air' at 3.30pm this afternoon. Subject only to the speed limitations of local internet connections, Sierra Leone programmes can now be broadcast globally. Watch XTV. 1st: The Sierra Leone National Film Workshop is about to launch yet another groundbreaking project: XTV! This project aims to provide a stimulus and showcase for low budget production of short films, documentaries, music videos, and other original productions.
JUNE
28th: We have located a new office at 47 John Street. The NGO 'PACE' have been very accommodating and are allowing us to join them in their building (which has that very essential item; a private generator for electricity!) We are finalising negotiations, and soon after we have made some necessary repairs and security precautions, we will move in to our new home! 10th: One of the pioneers of African film-making - Senegalese writer Sembene Ousmane - has died after a long illness at the age of 84.
MAY
Discussions with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to compile a professional working group to develop a public policy paper on the Film Industry for submission to Parliament.
APRIL
30th: The Workshop has still not received any confirmation regarding guarantees for the continued use and proposed development of the Globe Cinema as a central resource for Sierra Leone Film. Apparently the management of the Globe have arrived from London and are in Freetown. Unfortunately despite two attempts to reach them our request for confirmation of our accommodation and development arrangements for the Globe Cinema are suddenly been ignored.Despite having enjoyed positive discussions with the management in the past, the lack of any response to our enquiries forces us to reluctantly draw obvious conclusions regarding their commitment. As a result, we have begun making enquiries for alternative accommodation via relevant Ministries, and NGO contacts in Freetown.
MARCH
19th: The Freetown Film Festival (16th-18th March) ended as a professional success for everyone involved, but also a personal disaster for the Festival Director, Ian Noah. He had his personal bag stolen on the last night, and lost his mobile phone, address book (incl. important contacts), 35mm Olympus camera (incl. shots of the festival), SD Memory Card (incl. Festival documents, graphics and personal info), Multi-Card Reader (for the aforementioned), house keys, and a significant amount of cash (to pay for fuel and other expenses.) Needless to say he feels bitter and betrayed by the fact that it was a member of the audience - invited for free at the organisers' expense - that stole his belongings. As if to add insult to injury, on the very same evening, the Film Workshop's computer also chose to develop a 'Config.Sys" error and refused to work... 3rd: Had some interesting discussions with a representative from iEARN, in the UK. They have been doing film projects with young people in Sierra Leone. We may even have a film or two of theirs to show at the Freetown Film Festival.
FEBRUARY
27th: A great meeting with many filmmakers, and some excellent contributions. Thank you to everyone who came, and let's keep spreading the word! 23rd: Following frantic emails and phone calls to and from the UK, the Globe has confirmed that the Freetown Film Festival is on for the 16th-18th March. What's more, from the nature of our discussions, even more positive things may develop for Sierra Leone filmmakers... Well done the Globe! 14th: Freetown Film FestivalThis exciting opportunity to showcase Sierra Leone films was recently revealed, in a meeting, to some of the country's professional filmmakers. The official date has yet to be confirmed in writing or in any publicity as the organisers are waiting for confirmation from the management of the Globe Cinema. Rumour has it that it this planned three-day spectacular, is scheduled for the 16th, 17th and 18th of March...Watch this space!
